In Memoriam - Carolyn Baker
|
Carolyn Baker died on the 12th of July 2003. Earlier this year she was diagnosed with cancer. As colleagues and students we wish to remember her excellent work in teaching and research. She contributed greatly to the field of conversational analysis and ethnomethodology, particularly in the educational field, but also in gender studies, cultural identity and membership categorization work, language and technology, publishing extensively over the years. This work will continue to support further reserach in these fields. Carolyn was the best supervisor one could wish for; she was always ready to discuss with you, to advise and to help to develop your own thinking. In fact she was very respectful of you as a person and as an academic with your own projects, ideas, convictions and plans for the future. Wherever Carolyn went she was able to build a research community, attracting many students and collegues, having them meet, discuss, cooperate and become friends. Working with Carolyn was always productive, stimulating, exciting and fun. We loved her soft smile, her strength, her beauty, her elegance, her determination, her kindness. All of us are losing an excellent scholar, collegue and teacher, but above all, a very dear friend and a beautiful human being.
